FDA Keeps Me Healthy?

FDA Keeps Me Healthy?

When it comes to looking out for your health you should know you are not alone.  The Food and Drug Administration, (FDA) a federal agency in the Department of Health and Human Services was established to regulate the release of new foods and health-related products.

So what does this mean to me?  If I go to the FDA web site the tag line is “Protecting and Promoting Your Health”.  Areas listed that they regulate include:

  • Food
  • Drug
  • Medical devices
  • Vaccines
  • Blood & Biologics
  • Animal & Veterinary
  • Cosmetics
  • Radiation-emitting products
  • Tobacco products

This sounds like a tall order and should make me feel safer.

When it comes to food recalls I immediately think of the FDA and feel confident that their role is being fulfilled in protecting my health.  With the process that is involved in getting a drug approved I feel assured that nothing is getting to the point of release unless it has thoroughly passed rigorous testing and all side effects have been considered.   Under the arena of promoting health, I see a role for the FDA to play in relation to reducing the use of tobacco through public education since there is clear evidence that tobacco is a health risk.

What I am not clear about, is how the genetic testing product that was scheduled to be marketed through a large drug store to provide some of the genetic risks for 61 medical conditions and sensitivity or predisposition to adverse events for eight drugs falls under the auspices of requiring FDA approval.   In fact, I am not so sure the FDA understands whether it is their role either as evidenced by their letter to the manufacturer.    Here are some excerpts from their letter to Pathway Genomics.   “The Genetic Health Report appears to meet the definition of a device as that term is defined in section 201(h) of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act.  The FDA goes as far as saying to the manufacturer, “If you do not believe that you are required to obtain FDA clearance or approval for the Genetic Health Report, please provide us with the basis for that determination.”   Finally, FDA spokeswoman Erica Jefferson states “FDA believes we have regulatory authority over these laboratory-developed tests, but we recognize we have not always used this authority”.

I appreciate the role FDA plays in helping me stay healthy and promoting safe products that are used to treat illness, but in this instance with the Pathway Genomics Genetic Health Report I do not see a role for the FDA.  How ironic that a test that is designed to inform us of our potential health risks is being questioned by the FDA.

Healthy or Not Healthy – You decide.

I love listening to the Martha Stewart Sirius Satellite radio station on 112.  Alexis Stewart and her friend Jennifer have their own program called “Whatever.”  I was listening the other day when one of them mentioned they knew about a prominent family that had actually videotaped the funeral.

Sports and Kids

Sports

What a great time of the year for sports!  March Madness, NFL Teams trying to get better, Spring Training, NBA and NHL getting ready for the stretch run, and more!  Today I would like to talk about something I saw this past weekend.  My nine year old son was practicing with his baseball team.  In the middle of practice, from the field next to us, a father was yelling at other fathers; cussing, and just plain looking bad.

Sports are a great way to teach our children so many positive aspects of life.  Teamwork, sportsmanship, working hard and trying your best come to mind.  These are life lessons that we as parents hope our children develop and get better at during their life. Charles Barkley once said he any other athletes are not role models.  They have a job to do, and it is up to the parents to be role models. He is both correct and wrong with this statement.  Top athletes, just like top professionals in other fields of the public eye are role models for young minds whether we as parents like it.  Our children look up to LeBron James, Lindsey Vonn, Tom Brady, President Obama, Charlie Sheen, Michelle Obama and others.  They get paid large amounts of money. Part of getting paid that kind of money is you are in the public eye.

Happiness in Life Comes From Feeling Good

Written by Diane

It is a chilly 45 degrees outside today. Living in Florida makes walking and exercising a little easier, except today. Where are the others? The people who are really committed to exercise are out there with me on a day like today.

As long as the sun is shining, I can usually stand the cold. So my walk today was solitary except for the healthy looking Mom who was pushing the carriage while jogging. That kid was bundled up so tight it looked like that boy from the movie, The Christmas Story. You remember, the one whose mother wrapped him up in layers and finished off with a full body snowsuit and scarves wrapped around his face.

Smiles

Written by Diane

What a glorious morning in Central Florida. I was at the J. Blanchard Park for my walk today. The sun was shining and it has finally warmed up. The cold front went away and it was 60 degees at 9:30 this morning.
It was a delightful and incredibly healthy walk today. I passed so many people who actually smiled big bright smiles. One man actually asked me how I was. There were a lot of endorphins pumping out there and I couldn’t be happier!
A warm bright Saturday morning in Florida brings out all kinds of people. There were teenagers riding their bikes and actually smiled at me. One lady who was very heavy was pumping her arms and jiving to her ipod. A group of twenty something girls were running together. I could hear them before I saw them. They were talking up a storm, something about their Friday night.
It made me want to hang out with them. Unfortunately, if I need to get up and exercise the next day forget about a wild Friday night. Oh, remember those days?

The Death of a Trainer and Tillikum

Written by Diane

It is a sad day in Florida. The death of a trainer by an Orca whale occurred yesterday afternoon before some spectators and other witnesses at SeaWorld. Living in Florida, has given me the opportunity to witness the talents of these specially trained human beings and their animals. I was deeply saddened to know that the world has lost an animal lover and caretaker. The world cannot afford to lose loving people like Dawn Brancheau.
