I was at a women’s health event this past weekend and heard about flax seed.  Wow, flax seed lowers the level of your cholesterol and bad cholesterol, lowers your blood pressure, provides fiber, and lowers your risk of a heart attack.  And as if that was not enough it could possibly prevent breast cancer.

Recent studies also showed positive benefits of flax seed oil in Inflammatory Bowel Disease  (Crohn's Disease and Colitis). Flax seed oil seems to be able to heal the inner lining of the inflamed intestines.

Why am I just hearing about this now?  Flaxseed was cultivated in Babylon as early as 3000 BC.  Research shows that a study involving 40 patients with high cholesterol (greater than 240 mg/dL), daily consumption of 20 grams of ground flaxseed was compared to taking a statin drug. After 60 days, significant reductions were seen in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and the ratio of total to HDL cholesterol-in both groups. Those receiving flaxseed did just as well as those given statin drugs.  Statins are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in medicine.  You have heard about these drugs and seen the advertisements:

  • Lipitor
  • Zocor
  • Crestor

One would think that flax seed would be as prevalent as caffeine is, in the products that we consume.  Not the case yet.  I have to try this magic bullet and I will keep you posted.  Who wouldn’t want to naturally be able to reap the benefits that flax seeds can provide.  I will give it a try and let you know how it goes.  Come back and visit my blog for an update.
